My Thoughts on Education
As some of you may know I live in a town where education is a hot-button topic.
Here are the issues I believe would fix this....there should be accountability for school boards and school district administration. Since public schooling is funded by the state and local governments, if the school board or the administration is truly failing the people, you should have a place you can send complaints to that can revoke a contract and fire administrative officials if they refuse to do their job. Right now special elections can be held for elected officials, but not contracted staff. This should be a last-case effort, but it should be available.
Common-core...I have children that just graduated and one that is in first grade so I'm quite well acquainted with common core. I don't truly have an opinion on whether it's better or not than how I learned. It is different.
State testing and "no child left behind" okay this one I have a lot of opinions on but the basis of them are that tests don't prove intelligence. I have been teaching adults for many years now and the most important thing I teach them is that you don't have to memorize information because information is always changing. Yes, there are things you need to simply know....such as how to add, subtract, multiply and divide...how to find the area of a shape, how to drive (can't look that up while you're driving), but most "facts" that you need to know keep changing. What you need to learn more than anything else is how to find the right information and how to tell the difference between fact, opinion, and sheer farce... That would be a better kind of test - are we setting our kids up for success or failure? What do they really need in order to survive in the world? Who reviews these tests to determine if they are applicable to the real world? THAT is something I'd like to know...
